The Seventh of October
Hamas's surprise attack on October 7 is the deadliest day in the country's history.
- Justice Minister Yariv Levin presents a plan for far-reaching changes to the judicial system; throughout the year, hundreds of thousands demonstrate against it, and its supporters also take to the streets.
- Noa Kirel finishes third at the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool with the song "Unicorn".
- Hamas launches a surprise attack on the communities near the Gaza border and on the Nova music festival; about 1,200 people are murdered and 251 are abducted into Gaza, and the Swords of Iron War breaks out.
- The IDF launches a ground operation in the Gaza Strip. By the end of the year, more than twenty thousand people have been killed in the Strip, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, and many IDF soldiers also fall in the fighting.
- During a temporary ceasefire, 105 hostages, most of them women and children, are released from captivity, and in exchange Israel releases 240 Palestinian prisoners, women and minors.
