Gold in Tokyo

In the year of the Meron disaster and Operation Guardian of the Walls, Artem Dolgopyat and Linoy Ashram win Olympic gold.

  1. Forty-five people are killed in a crush at the Lag BaOmer celebration on Mount Meron – the worst civilian disaster in the country's history.
  2. Operation Guardian of the Walls: thousands of rockets are fired from Gaza, and severe riots break out in mixed cities; thirteen people are killed in Israel, and some two hundred and fifty Palestinians are killed in the Gaza Strip.
  3. The Bennett–Lapid government is sworn in, including for the first time an independent Arab party, Ra'am, as part of the coalition.
  4. Artem Dolgopyat in the floor exercise and Linoy Ashram in the rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around win gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics.
