Summer of Protective Edge
The abduction of three teenagers and Operation Protective Edge shake Israel through a long and painful summer.
- Former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon passes away, eight years after suffering a stroke.
- The Knesset elects Reuven Rivlin as the tenth President of the State.
- Three teenagers, Eyal Yifrach, Gil-Ad Shaer and Naftali Fraenkel, are abducted at a hitchhiking stop in Gush Etzion and murdered by terrorists; their bodies are found on 30 June. Two days later, Palestinian teenager Mohammed Abu Khdeir of Jerusalem is abducted and murdered by three Jews, a murder that also shocked the country.
- Operation Protective Edge in the Gaza Strip, during which Hamas attack tunnels are exposed and destroyed; seventy-three Israelis are killed in the operation, and more than two thousand Palestinians are killed in the Gaza Strip.
