The People Demand Social Justice

Hundreds of thousands take to the streets in the social protest, and in October Gilad Shalit comes home.

  1. Daphni Leef pitches a tent on Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv, and the housing protest becomes a nationwide movement.
  2. "The Million Man March": hundreds of thousands demonstrate across the country, demanding social justice.
  3. Professor Dan Shechtman of the Technion wins the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of quasicrystals.
  4. Gilad Shalit is released after more than five years in Hamas captivity, in a deal in which 1,027 Palestinian prisoners are released.
