Fire on the Carmel

The Carmel disaster: the deadliest fire in the country's history claims the lives of forty-four people.

  1. Shayetet 13 naval commandos take over a flotilla to Gaza; in the incident aboard the Mavi Marmara, nine Turkish activists are killed and ten soldiers are wounded, and Israel–Turkey relations fall into crisis.
  2. Israel officially joins the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as a member.
  3. A fire breaks out in the Carmel forests; forty-four people are killed, most of them Israel Prison Service cadets whose bus was trapped by the flames.
  4. Firefighting aircraft from many countries, including Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Russia and the United States, arrive to help put out the fire.
