A Summer of Sirens

The Second Lebanon War: thirty-four days of fighting in which the entire north takes to the shelters.

  1. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffers a severe stroke, and Ehud Olmert takes office as acting prime minister.
  2. In the elections to the Seventeenth Knesset, the Kadima party led by Olmert wins the largest number of seats.
  3. Soldier Gilad Shalit is abducted into the Gaza Strip in a Hamas raid near Kerem Shalom.
  4. Hezbollah attacks a patrol on the northern border and abducts soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, and the Second Lebanon War breaks out; 165 Israelis, soldiers and civilians, are killed in the war, and more than one thousand one hundred people are killed in Lebanon.
