First Gold

Gal Fridman brings Israel its first Olympic gold medal, and the Knesset approves the disengagement plan.

  1. Maccabi Tel Aviv won the European champions' basketball cup (the Euroleague) in a final held at the Nokia Arena (Yad Eliyahu) in Tel Aviv.
  2. Windsurfer Gal Fridman won a gold medal at the Athens Olympics – Israel's first Olympic gold medal.
  3. The Knesset approved Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan.
  4. Yasser Arafat, Chairman of the Palestinian Authority, died in a hospital in France.
