- Ariel Sharon defeated Ehud Barak in the special election for prime minister.
- A suicide bomber blew himself up at the entrance to the Dolphinarium discotheque in Tel Aviv; twenty-one people, most of them teenagers, were murdered.
- In a suicide bombing at the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem, fifteen people were murdered; another victim, Chana Nachenberg, died in 2023 after twenty-two years in a coma.
- Minister Rehavam Ze'evi was assassinated by terrorists in a Jerusalem hotel.
