The Year of Mourning
Seventy-three soldiers are killed in the helicopter disaster, in a year when Israel mourns again and again.
- Two Yasur helicopters collided over Moshav She'ar Yashuv on their way to Lebanon; seventy-three soldiers were killed.
- A Jordanian soldier opened fire on schoolgirls from Beit Shemesh visiting the Island of Peace at Naharayim, murdering seven of them; King Hussein came to console the families.
- A bridge over the Yarkon River collapsed during the opening ceremony of the Maccabiah, and four athletes from Australia died.
- Eleven Shayetet 13 naval commandos and the rescue force's doctor were killed in an operation in southern Lebanon – "the Shayetet disaster".
