Peace in the Arava
Israel and Jordan sign a peace treaty in the Arava, in a year when terror and hatred also strike hard.
- At the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, Baruch Goldstein, a resident of Kiryat Arba, murdered twenty-nine Muslim worshippers; the massacre was strongly condemned by the Israeli government.
- In a suicide bombing on the No. 5 bus on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv, twenty-two people were murdered.
- The peace treaty between Israel and Jordan was signed at the Arava border crossing, in the presence of US President Bill Clinton.
- Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres and Yasser Arafat received the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo.
