They Are Coming
The great wave of immigration from the Soviet Union brings more than one hundred and eighty thousand immigrants to Israel in a single year.
- The national unity government led by Yitzhak Shamir fell in a Knesset no-confidence vote, in a political maneuver that became known as "the Dirty Trick".
- Yitzhak Shamir presented a new government without the Alignment, and it won the confidence of the Knesset.
- Iraq invaded Kuwait, and in the following months Israel prepared for the possibility of war, including by distributing protective kits to civilians.
- More than one hundred and eighty thousand immigrants from the Soviet Union arrived in Israel within a single year – a record not seen since the days of mass immigration.
