Forty Years, a Satellite

Israel celebrates forty years of independence and launches its first satellite, Ofek-1, into space.

  1. Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir visited the Gaza Strip in the midst of the Intifada.
  2. The torch-lighting ceremony on Mount Herzl opened the celebrations of Israel's fortieth anniversary.
  3. Israel launched the Ofek-1 satellite into space aboard the Shavit launcher, joining the handful of countries that had launched a satellite on their own.
  4. In the elections to the Twelfth Knesset, the Likud led by Shamir won the largest number of seats, and a national unity government with the Alignment was again formed.
