The Road to Freedom

Prisoner of Zion Natan Sharansky is released from Soviet prison and lands in Israel, and in the autumn navigator Ron Arad is taken captive in Lebanon.

  1. Prisoner of Zion Natan (Anatoly) Sharansky, who had spent some nine years in Soviet prison, was released on the Glienicke Bridge in Berlin and arrived in Israel that same day.
  2. The British newspaper The Sunday Times published the testimony of Mordechai Vanunu, a former technician at the Negev Nuclear Research Center in Dimona.
  3. An Israeli Air Force Phantom jet was hit over Lebanon; the pilot was rescued, while navigator Ron Arad was taken captive and never returned.
  4. Under the rotation agreement of the national unity government, Yitzhak Shamir replaced Shimon Peres as prime minister.
