From Yamit to Lebanon
Israel evacuated Yamit and completed its withdrawal from Sinai, and six weeks later went to war in Lebanon.
- Israel completes its withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula, after evacuating the town of Yamit and the settlements of the Yamit region.
- The IDF launches Operation Peace for Galilee and enters Lebanon: the First Lebanon War.
- Members of the Lebanese Christian Phalanges massacre many hundreds of Palestinian refugees and Lebanese civilians in the Sabra and Shatila camps in Beirut, in an area under IDF control.
- Some four hundred thousand people demonstrate in Kings of Israel Square in Tel Aviv, demanding a state commission of inquiry into the massacre.
- The military governor's headquarters building in Tyre collapses in an explosion, and dozens of security personnel are killed.
