Upheaval

The Likud, led by Menachem Begin, won the elections, and in November Egyptian President Anwar Sadat landed in Jerusalem.

  1. Maccabi Tel Aviv wins the European Champions Cup in basketball for the first time.
  2. The Likud wins the elections to the Ninth Knesset, and for the first time since the founding of the state the labor parties move into opposition.
  3. Menachem Begin is sworn in as prime minister.
  4. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat lands at Ben Gurion Airport and, the next day, addresses the Knesset plenum.
