Golda at the Helm

After the death of Levi Eshkol, Golda Meir became Israel's first woman prime minister, as the War of Attrition flared along the Suez Canal.

  1. Prime Minister Levi Eshkol dies of a heart attack in Jerusalem.
  2. Golda Meir is sworn in as prime minister, the first woman to hold the office in Israel.
  3. Fighters of Shayetet 13 and Sayeret Matkal raid the Egyptian position on Green Island in the Gulf of Suez.
  4. In Operation Rooster 53, the IDF carries off by helicopter an entire Soviet radar station from the shore of the Gulf of Suez.
