A Year of Pride and Loss

Israel celebrated twenty years of independence with a parade in Jerusalem, but the submarine Dakar vanished in the depths, and fire along the borders grew fiercer.

  1. Contact is lost with the submarine INS Dakar on its way from Britain to Israel, and its 69 crew members vanish at sea.
  2. The IDF raids Fatah bases in the town of Karameh in Jordan, Operation Inferno (Tofet); the Jordanian army joins the fighting, and both sides suffer heavy losses.
  3. The IDF parade for the twentieth Independence Day is held in Jerusalem, for the first time since the city's reunification.
