Cracks and Growth

The Wadi Salib riots exposed the hardship of immigrants, and Mapai won the elections to the Fourth Knesset.

  1. The "Night of the Ducks": a public reserve call-up exercise broadcast on the radio causes panic and leads to a public affair.
  2. In Haifa's Wadi Salib neighborhood, riots break out among immigrants from North Africa protesting discrimination.
  3. The Carmelit, Haifa's underground railway, opens.
  4. In the elections to the Fourth Knesset, Mapai, led by Ben-Gurion, wins 47 seats.
