The Gates Open

The Knesset enacted the Law of Return, and a great wave of immigration arrived and was absorbed in the transit camps (ma'abarot).

  1. The Knesset passes a resolution affirming that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.
  2. The first flights of Operation Ezra and Nehemiah, bringing the Jews of Iraq to Israel, depart from Baghdad via Cyprus.
  3. The Knesset enacts the Law of Return, granting every Jew the right to immigrate to Israel.
  4. Galei Tzahal (IDF Army Radio) begins broadcasting; the same month, Operation Magic Carpet, bringing the Jews of Yemen to Israel, comes to an end.
